In-Person Afrocentirc Playgroups

Afro-Play Oakland provides a service of safe affinity in-person playgroups for families with children ages 0-5 identifying under the African Diaspora.

 

Our playgroups empower families through parent-child interaction, developmental play, enrichment, culturally relevant art, circle time and community building.

Pop Up’s & Events

We also offer Afro-Play “pop-ups” -

A special pre-arranged booking of enrichment services delivered in-person to another place of business.

 

Examples: Preschools/daycares, other family playgroups through Family Resource Centers, schools or other community service organizations.

 

Afro-Play Oakland also hosts activities at larger community and cultural events through special booking requests.

Curriculum Planning

Through our unique consulting services, Afro-Play Oakland tailors intentional curriculum support to other early learning environments.  Afro–Play specializes in play-based and developmentally appropriate cultural enrichment curriculum that centers in Black Joy!

  • Is Afro-Play only for children ages 0-5 years?
    “Playgroup” is for 0-5yr olds. Homeschooled 6yr olds can participate by special request. Special events/workshops are usually for all ages unless otherwise specified. Afro-Play’s intent is to serve the whole family, from the Babies to the Elders.
  • How can we donate to Afro-Play Oakland?
    a. PayPal - All donations are tax deductible b. You can Email us here for additional inquiry or assistance with your donation. c. Packaged/Brand new items to be given as a “gift giveaway” to our families. d. Your time (in-kind donation). If you would like to partner with us for a workshop/event for our families to attend or offer other services of support to our program; Go to Partner With Us page and fill out the inquiry. e. Packaged healthy snacks to give away during our bag distributions. Eventually, snacks for in-person playgroup; which can be fresh produce or packaged/boxed dry snacks. f. Virtual circle time contribution. Short story, Art demo, Dance, Song, Poem, Science experiment, etc. Email us here g. Cooked/Catered food for workshop/event.   • What is an Afrocentric playgroup?
    First, a “playgroup” is a space set up like a preschool, but with parent/caregiver participants. Afro-Play provides adult/child activities based in Afrocentrisim. Both a culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate play space for parent/caregiver & child.
  • How can I collaborate or partner with Afro-Play?
    Please refer to our Partners Page where you can fill out your inquiry/request for collaboration.

  • Does Afro-Play offer childcare?
    No. Afro-Play is a Playgroup. A space set up like a preschool but where parents/caregivers must also participate. It’s FUN! (see #1 above)
  • I do not identify as Black, African American, or of the African diaspora, but I am an adoptee or caregiver to a black child/children; can we join the program?"
    Yes, Afro-Play is ultimately a space for black children to be around, experience and engage in culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities. We are also a community of support with peer-to-peer resource sharing.
  • Do you accept used toy/clothes donations?
    We are currently not accepting used toy/clothing donations at the moment. However, we can accept packaged/brand new items to be given as a “gift giveaway” to our families.
  • How much does it cost to participate in Afro-Play program?
    Afro-Play is on a donation sliding scale of $7-$35 per class however, if you can not donate, you will not be turned away.
  • Is Afro-Play a Pre-school?
    No. Afro-Play is a Playgroup. A space set up like preschool but where parents/caregivers must also participate. It’s FUN! (see #1 above)
  • My child does not identify as Black, African American, or of the African diaspora is this place for me?"
    No. Afro-Play is an affinity space for families/children under the African Diaspora. We’d be happy to refer you to multicultural playgroups. (Please see #6 above.)
