What is an Afrocentric playgroup?First, a “playgroup” is a space set up like a preschool, but with parent/caregiver participants. Afro-Play provides adult/child activities based in Afrocentrisim. Both a culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate play space for parent/caregiver & child.

Are you currently meeting in person for playgroup?Due to Covid-19 and SIP orders; we are currently not meeting in person. However, we have weekly pre-recorded virtual circles, posted every Tuesday on YouTube & Facebook. Each virtual circle includes song, book readings, an at-home art activity, special guests and more. Each month we distribute free Afro-Play Art project bags which include art supplies for virtual circles of the current month.

Is Afro-Play only for children ages 0-5 years?“Playgroup” is for 0-5yr olds. Homeschooled 6yr olds can participate by special request. Special events/workshops are usually for all ages unless otherwise specified. Afro-Play’s intent is to serve the whole family, from the Babies to the Elders.

I do not identify as Black, African American, or of the African diaspora, but I am an adoptee or caregiver to a black child/children; can we join the program?"Yes, Afro-Play is ultimately a space for black children to be around, experience and engage in culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities. We are also a community of support with peer-to-peer resource sharing.

My child does not identify as Black, African American, or of the African diaspora is this place for me?"No. Afro-Play is an affinity space for families/children under the African Diaspora. We’d be happy to refer you to multicultural playgroups. (Please see #6 above.)

How much does an art bag cost?Afro-Play art bags are typically free, unless otherwise stated. However, donations are always appreciated to keep the bags going & given away to children for Free. Our art bag expense is about $300.00/month for 60 bag giveaways per month, which are given away twice a month. This expense does not include our time to curate, prepare and distribute the bags. Thank you for your support.

Do you accept used toy/clothes donations?We are currently not accepting used toy/clothing donations at the moment. However, we can accept packaged/brand new items to be given as a “gift giveaway” to our families.

If you would like to partner with us for a workshop/event for our families to attend or offer other Services of support to our program; Go to Partners Page and fill out the inquiry. e. Packaged healthy snacks to give away during our bag distributions. Eventually, snacks for in-person playgroup; which can be fresh produce or packaged/boxed dry snacks. f. Virtual circle time contribution. Short story, Art demo, Dance, Song, Poem, Science experiment, etc. Email us here g. Cooked/Catered food for workshop/event.
